Class 86 - Brief history

The Class 86 fleet is split into four sub classes. The information is grouped into these four sections which are as follows, class 86/1, 86/2, 86/4, 86/5 and 86/6.

CLASS 86/1

TECHNICAL DETAILS
built : 1965-1966 at English Electric, Newton-le-Willows
weight : 86.8 t
fuel capacity : N/A
max speed : 110 mph
train brakes : Air
train supply : Electric
route availability : 6
multiple working : TDM System

History
These three locomotives were built as standard with the rest of the build (original numbers were to be 86201-203), but were later chosen to evaluate revised electric equipment and suspension, which was to be fitted to the next built of electric locomotives. The locomotives have a normal body and frame, with a Class 87 style traction system.

Current Duties

86103 is the only loco out of service and has been for the past two years or so. Nos 86101/102 were used by English Welsh and Scottish Railway during their traction shortage, but 86103 was not so lucky, the locomotive was too taken on lease by EWS, but only to provide spares for the other two members of the class. 86101 and 86102 are currently in traffic with Freightliner working trains in the North West and 86103 has been cannibalised for spares and currently resides at Railcare Glasgow.

CLASS 86/2

TECHNICAL DETAILS
built : 1965-1966 at English Electric, Newton-le-Willows
weight : 85 t
fuel capcity : N/A
max speed : 100 mph
train brakes : Air
train supply : Electric
route availability : 6
multiple working : TDM System

History
The Class 86/2 locomotives are standard Class 86 locmotives, and are fitted with ETH.

Current Duties

The locmotives are owned by Forward Trust and are leased mainly to Anglia Railways and Virgin Trains for main line passenger work. A handful of this sub-class are owned by EWS for use on Mail Train and Charter train work. The EWS fleet is gradually getting smaller as the class comes to the end of its working career, coupled with the introduction of the Class 92 fleet.

CLASS 86/4

TECHNICAL DETAILS
built : 1965-1966 at English Electric, Newton-le-Willows
weight : 83 t
fuel capacity : N/A
max speed : 100 mph
train brakes : Air
train supply : Electric
route availability : 6
multiple working : TDM system

History
These locomotives were converted from Class 86/2 for use on mail trains. They retain their ETH, and are restricted to 100mph.

Current Duties

The active Class 86/4 locomotive fleet numbers 7 locomotives with one locomotive in store. The Class 86/4 fleet is owned by English Welsh and Scottish Railway who use the locomotives mainly on mail trains but the locomotives can sometimes be seen on intermodal trains substituting for Class 90/92 locomotives. Virgin Trains have recently been hiring locomotives from EWS and these locomotives have more often then not been Class 86/4 locomotives. They have been used mainly on the London - Birmingham and Manchester routes.

CLASS 86/5

TECHNICAL DETAILS
built : 1965-1966 at English Electric, Newton-le-Willows
modified : ADTranz Crewe / EWS Crewe IEMD
weight : 84 t
fuel capacity : N/A
max speed : 75 mph
train brakes : Air
train supply : Not Equipped
train supply : 6
multiple working : TDM system

History
The locomotive was modified from 86608 by Freightliner to test out a higher gearing to eliminate the need to double head Class 86/6 hauled freightliner trains. 86501 was unveiled to the public at the ADTranz Crewe Open Day.

Current Duties

The only Class 86/5 locomotive 86501 Crewe Basford Hall is currently undergoing an extensive testing programme and is based in Crewe Basford Hall Yard. The locomotive has currently visited these points on the Freightliner network: Ipswich and Trafford Park.

CLASS 86/6

TECHNICAL DETAILS
built : 1965-1966 at English Electric, Newton-le-Willows
weight : 84 t
fuel capacity : N/A
max speed : 75 mph
train brakes : Air
train supply : Electric, isolated
route availability : 6
multiple working : N/A

History
30 members of the original Class 86 fleet were modified to Class 86/6 locomotives by isolation of the Electric Train Supply. The locomotives are restricted to 75mph running (maximum speed of the freightliner trains). The locomotives are air brake only and are owned by Porterbrook Leasing.

Current Duties
The locomotives are leased to Freightiner by Porterbrook for use on the freighliner trains which operate over the electrified rail network.
